Unlike many businessmen, Gautam Adani didn’t acquire business from his father. He built it himself. His story is not an ordinary rag to riches story. But, it is an extraordinary tale of a man who did not accept his fate as it as. Instead, he worked hard to change it to make a substantial mark in the business world.
Gautam Adani hailed from a typical Gujarati family and had a natural inclination towards Dhanda (business) since childhood. He was born to Shrimati Shantaben and Shri Shantilal Adani on June 24, 1962, in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. They were seven siblings. His father was a textile merchant, and his family was economically very weak.
He studied in Seth CN Vidyalaya in Ahmedabad and later enrolled for a bachelor’s degree in Commerce at Gujarat University. He always had an interest in business and therefore, dropped out of college after the second year. Gautam Adani wanted to utilize his time in doing bigger and better things. He took off to Mumbai with just a hundred rupee note in his pocket.
Started Career as a Diamond Sorter
After moving to Mumbai, he started working with the Mahindra Brothers as a diamond sorter. In his 2-3 years of work tenure, he soaked in A-Z of the trade and made mental notes of all the changes in the market. Later, Adani set up his diamond brokerage at Zaveri Bazaar; it was his first break.
After a year, Gautam Adani’s brother, Mahasukh Adani bought a plastic unit in Ahmedabad. He requested him to return home to run the franchise. It was another turning point in his life as he decided to import polyvinyl chloride, which marked his entrance in the global trading market.
Making Big in the Industry
Economic liberalisation in the country proved to be a blessing in disguise for Gautam Adani. He took advantage of the situation and established the Adani Group in 1988. During the initial years, it focused on power and agricultural commodities. Nevertheless, the company grew both its resources and powers till 1991. At this time, Adani felt that it was the right time to diversify the company’s offerings.
Since that time, the multinational conglomerate Adani Group has diversified its commodities- Energy and Logistics with interest in Gas Distribution, Coal Trading and Mining, Power Generation and Transmission, and Oil and Gas Exploration. Today, Gautam Adani’s net worth is $ 7.09 billion. However, he has never forgotten his humble beginning in the industry.
The inspiring journey of Gautam Adani and Adani Group is a beacon of focus, determination, and success. The key to success is being constant in learning and using it meaningfully to achieve something big in life.
